(Mosaic Intelligence Report: December 24, 2008) As the end of 2008 approaches, views of the United States remain negative around the world; in the Middle East they have become virulent. The question now remains whether the Obama administration might elicit a more positive response from the populace in this part of the world. Can Obama restore the United States' image in the Middle East?
We decided to take a look at some of the most important issues in the region that remain unresolved at the close of 2008, issues the new U.S. president will have to address.

(Mosaic Intelligence Report: December 19, 2008) Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is in Washington. Why?

According to his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina, "The president is working to obtain the end of the Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza." But according to an official in Gaza, the visit is yet another photo-op, "nothing less, nothing more."

Read More on the Huffington Post

(Mosaic Intelligence Report: December 12, 2008) The scenario is all too familiar. When things seem to be under control, terrorists manage to strike where unexpected. The latest incident was a suicide attack in Kirkuk, the center of Iraq's northern oil fields. The bombing near the ethnically-mixed city came during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. It rocked an area that has seen fewer attacks than other regions in Iraq. A few days ago, it was Mumbai, India. Next week -- who knows?

Read More on the Huffington Post

(Mosaic Intelligence Report: December 5, 2008) Palestinians in the West Bank are bracing themselves for more violence by extremist Israeli settlers after their eviction from a Palestinian-owned house in the town of Hebron. The settlers say that they had legally purchased the house, a claim vehemently denied by its Palestinian owner.

Since their eviction, settlers have torched fields, olive groves and yards in Hebron and nearby villages.

Read More on the Huffington Post

The New York Times has finally picked up on this topic two days after this post. Read

Al Jazeera's Listening Post looks at the US air raid on Eastern Syria last month, and the way that story was covered. There are two conflicting narratives: Damascus says four US helicopters illegally entered Syrian airspace from Iraq and killed innocent civilians; Washington says the target was a senior al-Qaeda figure. The eyewitness accounts and amateur video footage shown on Syrian TV posed a lot of questions that remain unanswered by the Pentagon and ignored by the Western media. We look at the difficulties of differentiating between truth and propaganda.

(Mosaic Intelligence Report: November 21, 2008) Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has placed advertisements in several Israeli newspapers in an attempt to increase interest in an Arab peace plan for the region. The initiative, which offers Israel normal relations with Arab countries, was first proposed in 2002.

These full-page advertisements were published in Hebrew in four Israeli newspapers. The text of the advertisement read:

"Fifty-seven Arab and Islamic countries will establish diplomatic ties and normal relations with Israel in return for a full peace agreement and an end to the occupation."

Madison Avenue seems to have moved into Ramallah. However, the problem is that Mahmoud Abbas seems to have forgotten about the other Palestinian government -- the one in Gaza... or maybe not.

(Mosaic Intelligence Report: October 25, 2008) On "Meet the Press"former Secretary of State Colin Powell crossed party lines and endorsed Barack Obama for President of the United States. He also repudiated his Republican Party for moving too far to the right. During that same interview, Powell referred to the death of a Muslim soldier, Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan of Manahawkin, N.J., who was killed in Iraq on Aug. 6, 2007. Powell framed the entire "Obama is a Muslim" debate in striking terms with his reference to this fallen American soldier.

"He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life," Mr. Powell said.

"Is there something wrong with being Muslim in America? No, that's not America,"Powell added.

(Mosaic Intelligence Report: October 24, 2008) A few days ago, the Iranian president called on Iraqis to reject a security agreement which would allow U.S. troops to remain in Iraq for three years. Ahmadinejad stated that Iraq could defend itself and block the influence of foreigners. But U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice dismissed his claim and told reporters Thursday in Mexico that Iraqis can defend their interests without the input of Iranians.
I have to give credit where credit is due. Last night, Sarah Palin managed to say Ahmadinejad three times without stumbling or stuttering like her partner John McCain did when he debated Barack Obama. And yes, I know she confused McClellan for David McKiernan when referring to the commanding general in Afghanistan.
But when it came to the Middle East, both candidates forgot to bring their "Middle East 101" manuals to the podium with them.
Read More and Share Your Thoughts on the Huffington Post
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jamal-dajani/
