On October 7, 2006, the journalist Anna Politkovskaya was shot and killed in the elevator of her apartment block in Moscow. The murderer silenced one of the last voices to speak out for the fellow citizens deprived of their rights – for the victims of torture and murder. Abroad, Anna Politkovskaya's courageously incisive reporting had already been acknowledged with numerous awards. She was a woman dedicated to the truth, who dared to criticize those in power openly, and her death dealt a crippling blow to freedom of speech and the press in the vast Russia of Vladimir Putin. This is a documentary about the situation of that country in the wake of the assassination.
